Wandsworth is a borough in south west London, about five miles out from the centre of the city. Taking its name from the river Wandle, it is a very old town, appearing in records as far back as the 11th century. Today, it is a relatively rich suburban area, with large areas of fine Victorian houses, and very popular with professionals working in the centre of London.

In the past, Wandsworth was famous for its beer production. Young's brewery in the centre of the town still stands today. Beer production on this site started in the 16th century and only stopped in 2006, making the brewery the oldest site where beer has been brewed continuously in Britain. To this day, Young & Co has its headquarters in Wandsworth. The area is well known for other industries. It has been home over the centuries to a number of waves of industrial workers immigrating from the Netherlands, Poland, and other European countries. For a long time, the gas works in Wandsworth provided much of the energy for the south west of London.

Today, much of the industrial heritage of the town has been displaced by a more residential, family-friendly atmosphere. There are large areas of grand terraced houses. The old wharf area has been developed into a region of apartment blocks, restaurants, and pedestrianised areas, replacing the old warehouses. There are a number of excellent pubs and restaurants in the area, many of them located close to Wandsworth Bridge.

The high street has the large Southside shopping centre, which has been recently regenerated and now includes retail space, restaurants, and a cinema. There are walks along the river Wandle to Earlsfield and Wimbledon. King George's Park, by the riverside, is a pleasant place to walk and picnic.

Wandsworth is well served by public transport. Residents can use Wandsworth Town, Wandsworth Common, and Earlsfield railway stations, and are normally less than ten minutes by train from central London.
