A district in the south part of London, located in the Wandsworth Borough, Tooting is situated five miles south southwest of Charing Cross. Originally a settlement dating back to Pre-Saxon times, the area certainly has an eclectic history and was the setting of 1970s BBC comedy "Citizen Smith", whose central character Wolfie Smith (Robert Lindsay) was a hopeless revolutionary, demanding "Freedom for Tooting" as part of the Tooting Popular Front.
Apart from various historical claims to fame Tooting is also a haven of lush greenery encapsulated by the wonderful Tooting Common consisting of two areas of land lying between Tooting (Tooting Graveney Common and Tooting Bec Common) Streatham and Balham. Historically Tooting Bec Common was within the parish of Streatham, with the area's name being derived from the links it shared with Bec Abbey at Le Bec-Hellouin, Normandy. Tooting Graveney Common previously belonged to Tooting parish and a thin line of other common land running further to the south towards the River Graveney. The boundary between the two commons is known as Doctor Johnson's Avenue after the famous 18th century author Samuel Johnson, who is alleged to have walked here regularly when visiting the diarist Hester Thrale from whom we know so much about the doctor himself. In addition, both commons have been recognised as Sites of Metropolitan importance for Greater London due to their inclusion of a number of habitats housing rare wildlife.
Recently Tooting has donated its name to what some may call a rather unorthodox landmark. The Tooting Crater, located on Mars, was so named by Peter Mouginis-Mark a planetary scientist working in Hawaii, in honour of his English hometown. But the area also has a number of other famous names such as comedians Paul Merton and Steven K Amo, along with professional footballer Darren Bent and Jimmy White - a professional snooker player.
