However, the word Belsize comes from the French words ‘bel assis' which mean ‘well situated'. The area is located nearly three and a half miles from Charing Cross and also lies near Hampstead, Camden Town, Primrose Hill, and Kentish Town. The heath at Hampstead, known as Hampstead Heath, is a 10-12 minute walk away, while the park at Primrose Hill is a 5 minute walk.

The area has also featured in literature, radio, and TV. For example, in 1983 Peter Straub called his poetry collection Leeson Square and Belsize Park due to the fact that he took up residence in the area of Belsize Park for some time. The area was also the setting for a radio drama known as Waggoners Walk, which ran from 1969 until 1980 on Radio 2.
Belsize Park has other claims to fame, due to many celebrities making the area their home. The list of celebrities who have lived or still live in the area include: Simon Pegg (actor), Kate Winslet (actress), Tim Burton (director) and wife Helena Bonham Carter (actress), Matthew Bellamy (Muse, lead singer), and more.
