The IG, or Ilford, postcode district covers parts of Essex and London. The IG1 postcode area covers Ilford (otherwise known as Great Ilford), which lies in the Borough of Redbridge and is situated just over 9miles from Charing Cross. Ilford is recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086 and is listed as ‘Ilefort’, which means ‘ford over the Hyle’ (Hyle being the early name for the River Roding).
Historically, Ilford was a rural settlement, but its strategic placement on the River Roding and also the London to Colchester road meant that the settlement developed and expanded. As it has become larger, the IG1 area has drawn in many visitors and in 2011 the area was recorded as being the fastest-growing destination in Europe.
The IG1 area has a rich history, and Ilford is the only area in the United Kingdom where a complete mammoth skull has been found. It was discovered in 1860 and can now be seen by visitors to the Natural History Museum. Other prehistoric findings and remains can be found at Redbridge Museum in Ilford. Other attractions to the area include some Iron Age earthwork (known as Uphall Camp), West Ham United F. Stadium, Cricklefield Stadium (grounds for Waltham Forest F. and Ilford F.), North Woolwich Old Station Museum, and Bow Castle. On top of this, there are numerous notable people who are associated with the IG1 area, including John Logie Baird (inventor of the television) who worked in a workshop on the premises of a building in Ley Street.
The IG1 also offers plenty of transport links, making it an ideal location for commuters or those who love to travel. These links include numerous bus routes on the London Buses network and also many railway stations, such as: Ilford, Seven Kings, Gants Hill (Underground), and Manor Park. Beyond this, the IG1 area is also within 25miles of some major airports, including: Stansted, London Heathrow, and London City airport.
Moving to a new home or office in the IG1 area offers you insight into its rich history and provides you with the support of transport links. When moving to the IG1 postcode district, be sure to book your move with London Removals, as our aim is to support you during your move and to make your move as easy and stress-free as possible. Helping you is important to us, so we even offer you a free moving checklist. One item to tick off is to ensure you reserve a parking space for the moving vehicle in front of your new office or home. Our years of moving experience have shown us that this minimises delays and can also stop you getting fined by the local council. To book a space, go to the Borough of Redbridge’s website.
